UBUNTU EVENTS
May 09, 2024: 8:30am - 1;00pm
Locations:
AK Child & Family, A United Women in Faith Mission Institution
Hear the history of AK Child & Family (formally the Jesse Lee Home then Alaska Children’s Services)- one of Alaska’s two National Mission Institutions (NMIs), and work to prepare the campus grounds for the summer season with garden clean up and prep, yard work (and maybe even splitting some firewood)! Ubuntu Day of Service fee includes:
Beans' Café and the Children's Lunchbox
Bean's Café became a vision realized in 1979. It exists to fight hunger for all ages, one meal at a time, while providing a pathway to self-sufficiency with dignity and respect. The Children’s Lunchbox distributes pantry boxes to food-insecure children and families providing all meals through a mobile food distribution model. Instead of individuals coming to us, or one central location- we are bringing food to where the individuals are: shelters, supportive housing, etc. Join us as we help to assemble pantry boxes for emergency food distribution sites and local elementary schools for families in need.
Ubuntu Day of Service fee includes;
Showered in Grace (On Site)
In partnership with the Alaska Conference United Methodist Church and the Anchorage Coalition to End Homelessness, Showered in Grace was created to provide hot showers to our unsheltered neighbors in the Anchorage community. Jennifer Miller started the organization in the middle of the Covid Pandemic, when the unprecedented health crisis had the potential to further complicate matters. For the first part of this On-Site Ubuntu, participants will assemble hygiene kits to provide to Showered in Grace clients. There is an optional short walk*to First United Methodist Church, where you can view the Showered in Grace mobile trailer equipped with three fully enclosed shower stalls. Each stall has a sink, towel rack and bench. During the late morning and early afternoon participants will help implement the Showered in Grace program first hand. The showers will be offered to the unsheltered, and United Women in Faith will operate a hospitality table for those waiting and will clean showers after each use. A box lunch is included in the Ubuntu registration price. *The walk is about 1/3 of a mile one way (five blocks), jackets are recommended for those planning to walk.

Hidden History Tour- Led by Sandra Woods
In the early to mid-1970s, New York schools’ Social Studies curriculum included a unit on Alaska where I learned about Eskimos, salmon and igloos. But those lessons weren’t accurate. Alaska is home to the Athabascan, Yupik, Inupiat, Unangan, and Tlingit, as well as many other Alaska Native peoples. The Russians arrived in 1741, and by 1874, missionaries began arriving. The Methodist Church set up its first mission and school in 1886. The missions set up in Unalaska (on the Aleutian chain) and Sitka (in the southeast) still exist. In 1914, the US Army arrived and took over the land of the Dena’ina and established Anchorage. The fish camps were destroyed and the Dena’ina pushed out.
We’ll travel to Palmer, a town established as a part of President Roosevelt’s New Deal to transplant farmers from Michigan, Minnesota and Wisconsin. This became the Matanuska Colony Project. On the return trip, we’ll stop in the Native Village of Eklutna and learn about their history and their efforts to reclaim and recover land used by the US Army for housing, storage and vehicle maintenance along the Eklutna River. This 4-hour tour will provide a unique insight into the history of the area by “locals” who want to provide an understanding of the “hidden history” you didn’t learn in school. Lunch is provided.
Tour! Anchorage Volksmarch-
A volksmarch is a noncompetitive 3.1 mile (5 km) walk. It's not a pledge walk, it's not a race, it is a fun activity you do with a club, with your family, with your pet, or all by yourself. This tour is an easy walk along city streets and sidewalks throughout the downtown Anchorage area. The route includes most of the historical sites downtown with a brief description of each. Lunch is on your own.
Meet in lobby at 9 AM
